Propagation Plugs, Starter Blocks and Final Bags: Build the Root Zone as a System

Propagation media performs best when the plug, starter block and final production container are designed as one transplant system. Misalignment between stages creates unnecessary variation in root contact, moisture and labour.

Match the physical dimensions

The plug should sit securely in the starter-block opening without large air gaps or excessive compression. The starter block should then connect cleanly with the final production container so roots have a predictable path forward.

Hydrate consistently

Compressed coco products should be wetted uniformly before use. Inconsistent wet-up creates different starting conditions across a tray before the crop has even begun.

Change irrigation as the root zone changes

A small plug has little water buffer. A starter block and final bag behave differently. Adjust event size and frequency as root mass and substrate volume increase rather than carrying one schedule through every stage.

Design for labour and automation

Consistent dimensions can improve manual transplant speed and make automated handling more practical. Standardization matters when thousands of plants move through propagation each cycle.
