PPF, PPFD and Efficacy: How to Compare Commercial Grow Lights
Share
Wattage tells you how much electrical power a fixture uses. It does not tell you how much useful plant light reaches the crop. Commercial lighting comparisons should separate fixture output, efficiency and canopy distribution.
PPF: total photon output
Photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), measured in µmol/s, describes the total photosynthetically active photons emitted by the fixture each second. It is useful for comparing fixture output.
PPFD: photons arriving at the canopy
Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), measured in µmol/m²/s, describes photon flux arriving at a specific area. Mounting height, fixture spacing, optics and room geometry all affect PPFD distribution.
Efficacy: output per watt
Fixture efficacy, measured in µmol/J, compares photon output with electrical input. Higher efficacy can reduce electrical load for a given light output, but it does not replace a proper lighting layout.
Uniformity matters
A high average PPFD with large hot and cold spots can produce uneven crop response. Review a full map at the intended mounting height and area.
Compare the complete electrical and environmental load
Lighting power becomes heat that the facility must manage. Include dimming strategy, HVAC impact, electrical distribution, warranty and serviceability when comparing fixtures.
