How to Evaluate Biostimulant Claims in Commercial Cultivation

Biostimulant products often arrive with strong claims. Professional growers should separate what is known about the formulation from what has actually been demonstrated in their crop and jurisdiction.

Start with the guaranteed analysis or ingredient declaration

Identify the listed ingredients and concentrations. This is more useful than marketing language because it tells the cultivation team what is actually being added to the program.

Separate nutrition from pest-control claims

A nutrient or biostimulant can influence plant physiology without being a registered pesticide. Claims about controlling disease or pests may require specific regulatory authorization. Use the current label and applicable regulations.

Ask for the trial design

If a performance study is cited, look for control groups, replication, crop conditions, rate, duration and the measured endpoint. A percentage increase without the underlying method is difficult to apply commercially.

Test one variable

Run representative treatment and control zones while keeping genetics, environment, irrigation and base nutrition as similar as practical. Measure the outcome before deciding whether the input belongs in the standard program.

Include cost and operational complexity

A product that improves one metric can still be a poor commercial decision if it adds excessive labour, incompatibility or cost per accepted unit.
