Commercial Cleaner/Degreaser Dilution: Match Concentration to Soil Load

Concentrated cleaners are useful because one product can cover light routine cleaning and heavier soil removal. The strongest dilution is not automatically the best operating choice.

Start with the soil

Dust and light films need less chemistry than heavy grease, carbon or accumulated grime. Use the lowest concentration that reliably completes the task according to the product directions.

Standardize dilution

Provide measuring tools, labelled secondary containers and written dilution ranges. Guessing by colour or smell produces inconsistent results and unnecessary product consumption.

Give difficult soils dwell time

A short dwell period can allow surfactants and cleaning agents to loosen the soil before agitation. Follow the product instructions and do not allow chemistry to dry on sensitive surfaces.

Rinse where required

Food-contact surfaces and some materials require a potable-water rinse after cleaning. Follow current product directions and facility QA requirements.

Cleaning is not disinfection

A cleaner/degreaser removes soil. If the SOP requires a registered disinfectant, that is a separate step unless the product label specifically combines both functions.
